Man sorry for 'being a numpty' while drunk in city centre

A man admitted being "a numpty" when he faced court for causing bother while drunk in Nottingham.

Anthony Phillips, 52, was arrested after refusing to stop shouting and swearing in Friar Lane at 2.30am, magistrates heard.

When arrested, he banged his head against a glass pane in a holding cell and began to smear his blood around, said Neil Hollett, prosecuting.

That left police having to pay £70 for specialist cleaners before two cells could be used again.

A £246 fine with £85 prosecution costs and a £32 government surcharge were ordered from Phillips, of Clare Close, Basford. He must also pay for the clean-up.

Phillips told the three magistrates: "I just apologise for being a numpty but I can't take it back."

He admitted being drunk and disorderly on December 8, as well as causing criminal damage on the same night.
