Man shot dead in Washington Heights: police

A 42-year-old man was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon in Washington Heights on the South Side, according to police.

Officers found a man unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his head about 2:30 p.m. in the 9300 block of South Halsted Street, Chicago police said.

He died at the scene.

His name has not been released by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Area Two detectives are conducting a homicide investigation.

The last reported shooting in that block happened April 29, wounding a 22-year-old man. The CPD’s 22nd District, which encompasses Washington Heights and much of the Southwest Side, has seen a 65% increase in shootings in 2020 compared to the same time in 2019, according to police statistics.
