Man shot and killed by police in Boyle Heights is identified

April 13--Authorities have released the name of a 39-year-old man who was fatally shot by LAPD officers moments after he allegedly shot and killed another man in Boyle Heights.

The Los Angeles County coroner identified the man as Roberto Rodriguez.

The incident began about 10:25 p.m. Wednesday as officers were patrolling near 4th and Soto streets, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The officers saw a man collapse and fall in the middle of 4th Street, said LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery. The man, believed to be in his late 20s, died.

Montgomery said the officers called for backup, saying they were at the scene of a possible shooting and that they had spotted a man running east from the scene.

A police helicopter arrived in the area and saw the man believed to be the suspect, he said.

The helicopter followed him to Mathews Street and directed officers to the location, Montgomery said. When the officers arrived, they confronted a man armed with a handgun.

The man, identified as Rodriguez, was shot and killed. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

It was not known if the man fired at the officers or how many officers fired their weapons, Montgomery said. He said multiple units were on the scene at the time.
