Man's arm 'left a mess' after dog attacks him and puppy at Pets at Home store

A man's arm was reportedly left a "mess" after he was attacked by a dog at Pets at Home.

The animal - believed to be a Staffordshire Bull Terrier - also attacked a puppy in the horrifying incident inside the Stoke-on-Trent store yesterday afternoon.

Customers were left shaking after witnessing the attack, which was believed to have happened in a queue for the till.

An eye-witness told StokeonTrentLive: "A man and puppy were savaged by a Staffie in Pets At Home. I'm not sure if he was the puppy's owner.

"The store was very busy at the time. The counter blocked my view but plenty of other people saw it happen.

"An ambulance came at around 2.30pm. Judging by the state of him, I think the man will have been taken to hospital."

Another customer, Bonnie Miles said she was stroking the Staffie just before it happened and she she never though it would have attacked.

She wrote on Facebook : "I was at the till when it happened, thankfully I was on the other side. I do hope that puppy is ok - I thought about the pooch all night.

"I never knew a man had gotten bitten too! I do hope he recovers quickly. I walked out because there was nothing I could do and to be honest I was shaking."

Ian Summerfield said the dog was on a lead at the time and the owner tried to pull it away.

He added: "I was on other side of counter at time. Unpleasant incident - the man's arm was a mess."

Paramedics were sent to the scene and it is believed the man was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital.

The extent of both the man and puppy's injuries are not yet known.

Staffordshire Police confirmed they were aware of the incident with officers set to interview the victim.

A spokesman said: "An incident at Pets at Home at Festival Heights was reported to us at 3.13pm yesterday.

"A man and puppy had reportedly been attacked by another dog in the store but we are yet to speak to the injured party so we can not release any further details at this time.

"The incident has been passed over to our neighbourhood police team to investigate."
