Man rushed to hospital following 'machete' attack after 'road rage incident'

A man was rushed to hospital after a 'machete' attack which caused a serious arm injury.

Police said they were initially called to reports of a fight between two women, who were passengers in separate cars on a street in Birkenhead, Liverpool between 5.45pm and 6.15pm. It's believed the two women returned to their cars.

However it is reported a short time later, at around 6.20pm, a second fight took place on a car park close to Heron Foods and the Coach and Horses pub on Hoylake Road. During this incident a 44-year-old man was slashed to the arm with a bladed weapon, reports Liverpool Echo.

The man was taken to hospital where his injuries were described as serious. He remains in a stable condition.

A 35-year-old woman has now been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm. She remained in custody today. Police are now attempting to trace another another man.

Witnesses at the scene said it was a "road rage incident." One man said: "A lad has jumped out and run at the car with the machete. [The victim] disarmed the lad but has a 20 inch cut to his arm and also bad fingers from wrestling with the blade."

One woman who works at a nearby salon said she saw the man appear from an alleyway next to Heron Foods on Hoylake Road and he was “covered in blood”.

She told The ECHO: “He [the victim] ran out of the alleyway and then he just tried to flag down Coastguard, it was scary, there was blood everywhere. I was with my sister-in-law and her car was parked behind Heron so as we walked through there was just blood everywhere.

“He [the victim] looked at me and I wasn’t sure if he was going to run out. He just looked pure shocked in his eyes and ran into the barbers. He was holding his left arm where he was stabbed and was with his kids. His kids just watched all of that play out in front of them. There was also a really young kid getting their hair done in the barbers.”

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Caton said: "An investigation is currently underway as we seek to establish what has taken place and we are carrying out a number of lines of enquiry including speaking to witnesses and examining CCTV footage. We know that the area around Gautby Road and Hoylake Road would have been busy last night and we believe there were a number of people who may have captured either of the incidents on their mobile phones.

"I would ask those people to come forward and share that footage with us to assist with our enquiries. I would also ask that anyone who was in that area who has a dashcam checks their footage to see if they captured anything significant as it could be vital to our investigation.
