Man rushed to hospital after horsebox and car crash near Scots ferry port amid 50-mile diversion

A man is in hospital following a crash between a horsebox and a car near one of Scotland's biggest ferry ports.

Emergency services were srambled to the smash on the A77, just north of Cairnryan, Dumfries and Galloway, near the Stena Line ferry port, around 3pm today.

It is understood the horsebox toppled on its side, crashing on top of the car.

Air ambulance crews have been spotted at the scene and one man has been taken to hospital to be treated.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

No other people involved are understood to be injured.

Police Scotland were unable to provide an update on the condition of the horses.

The road is currently locked down by cops, with officers and their vehicles blocking the road.

The closure is impacting traffic between Stranraer and Ballantrae, with a 50-mile diversion in place for motorists in the area.

A Police Scotland spokesman told the Record: “At round 2.55pm on Friday, April 1 police were called to the A77 near Cairnryan, following a report of a crash involving a car and a horsebox.

"One man has been taken to hospital and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

"Emergency services remain at the scene and the road is currently blocked.”

Roads and traffic monitoring service Inrix stated that motorists travelling between Stranraer and Ballantrae are being diverted 50 miles.

A statement from roads and traffic monitoring service Inrix read: "A77 in both directions closed, slow traffic due to accident, a car and a horsebox involved from Cairnryan to Ballantrae.

"The road has been closed since 3.30pm, affecting traffic between Stranraer and Ballantrae.

"A 50 mile diversion is in place. Traffic from Stranraer is diverting East along the A75 all the way to Newton Stewart, and then following the A714 to rejoin the A77 at Girvan.

"Southbound traffic is being diverted from Girvan down the A714 to Newton Stewart."

The Scottish Ambulance Service have been contacted for comment.

The road has since fully reopened.
