Man repeatedly punched by thug trying to deface 'Lennon Wall' in Hong Kong

A man has been hailed a hero after standing up to a pro-China thug who repeatedly punched him in Hong Kong.

Shocking footage shows the man being hit multiple times in the face as he tried to stop a group trying to tear down protest notes on the wall.

The incident took place at a "Lennon Wall" - walls plastered with colourful notes - that have been sprung up across the city in recent weeks.

The walls emerged amid huge protests in Hong Kong over a bill that would have seen suspects in the city extradited to mainland China.

The scuffle filmed at the wall is one of a number of fights to have broken out in the city.

One man has been arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm over the incident on Thursday morning, local media HK01 reports.

Video emerged on Facebook showing a man wearing a blue t-shirt, named as Mr Mak, 36, being hit in the face several times by a man in a grey top, identified by the surname Wong.

It's said Mr Mak and other members of the public tried to defend the wall as Wong, 46, claimed it 'has affected the image of the city'.

Wong is claimed to have reported the matter to police but before they arrived launched his attack.

The footage shows Wong suddenly punching Mr Mak in the face in front of shocked passerby.

Mr Mak did not hit back and kept his hands behind him.

Onlookers can be seen yelling at Wong in a desperate bid to stop him and at some point, Mr Mak falls to the ground.

Wong then turns around and starts tearing the sticky notes off the wall.

Mr Mak was taken to United Christian Hospital with injuries to the face and hands.

Mr Mak, who is also a Taekwondo black belt holder, told local media: "I don't know what could happen if I hit back.

He said there were young children and women at the scene and that he felt compelled to step up to protect them.

"I believe I have the ability to stand in between them and help out. I don't wish to use to violence to solve any problems."
