Viral clip captures awkward audience interaction
On July 6, comedian Kate Hu shared a video from one of her stand-up performances on Instagram, where she was interacting with a couple seated in the audience.
During the conversation, Hu asked the woman, who appeared to be Chinese, whether her boyfriend was Indian.
“So you’re Chinese. And he’s Indian, right?” Hu asked.
The woman jokingly replied, “Unfortunately,” before Hu revealed that her own boyfriend is also Indian. The audience member then quipped, “He’s a different species,” prompting laughter from the crowd.
Man tries to hug comedian without consent
The exchange took an uncomfortable turn when the man suddenly got up and attempted to hug Hu while she was on stage.
The comedian immediately stepped back and pushed him away, making it clear that the gesture was not welcome. Her video also featured the on-screen caption: “No touching the comedian.”
Hu then addressed the incident through the microphone and questioned why he had tried to hug her.
Question about his identity leads to confession
Following the awkward moment, Hu asked the man a simple question: “Which state of India are you from?”
Unable to answer, the audience member admitted that he was not Indian after all.
“Uh, I am from Pakistan,” he said, prompting laughter from the audience and making the interaction even more unexpected.
Social media reacts
The clip was later reposted on X, where it quickly gained traction and triggered debate online.
Many users criticised the man both for attempting to hug the comedian without her consent and for initially presenting himself as Indian before revealing that he was Pakistani.
One user commented, “Pakistanis are really suffering from identity crisis at the last stage.”
Another wrote, “Never seen an Indian claiming to be Pakistani abroad. Why do Pakistanis then claim to be Indians?”
Similar reactions appeared on Instagram, with one viewer commenting, “Pretending to be Indian abroad gets caught.”
The viral video continues to generate discussion online, with many viewers highlighting the importance of respecting personal boundaries while others focused on the man's admission about his nationality.
