Man pays after kicking policeman in the groin

A homeless man apologised in court for kicking a policeman in the groin.

Ian Russell-Wilson, 56, of no fixed address, appeared before Bristol magistrates charged with three assaults on emergency workers at Fremantle House in Dove, Street, Kingsdown on June 4 this year.

He indicated guilty pleas to the assaults on PCs Khanna, Tracey Small and Nicola O’Connell.

Kate Burnham-Davies, prosecuting, said he kicked PC Khanna in the groin and kicked out at the women constables.

Russell-Wilson was heard to say: “I kicked the officer in the b******s, I should get done for that.”

Dianne Heys, defending, said her client had not been charged in relation to a domestic incident and police had appeared to get the “wrong end of the stick” when they arrested him and he lashed out, before being immediately apologetic.

The court heard he would not be fit for unpaid work.

Magistrates told the defendant he was up for serious matters and the court took a strong view.

But in his favour was his early guilty plea and one historical previous offence.

Russell-Wilson was handed a 12-month conditional discharge.

He was told to compensate officers Khanna and Small £50 each and pay a £20 victim surcharge, to be taken from his benefit money from August 5.

He told the court: “I’m just sorry for what I put you through and for what I did.”
