Man 'passed out and crushed stepson, 2, to death after taking prescription drug'

A man crushed his toddler stepson to death when he passed out after taking prescription drugs, police say.

Ty Lucente, 37, is said to have rolled off the sofa and onto two-year-old Michael.

It's claimed Lucente had taken buprenorphine, a drug used to treat chronic pain, but did not have a prescription for it.

Lucente himself called an ambulance but medics were unable to revive the child at the home in Freedom, Pennsylvania.

Alanna Darroch, the mother of the toddler, described her trauma as "the worst pain".

"We immediately started chest compressions and breathing for him and everything," she told Action News 4.

"There was no pulse. His lips were blue. My baby was gone, and I had to yell at Ty to call 911.

"I feel the worst pain. It feels like my heart has been ripped out of my chest.

"That little boy saved my life. When I got pregnant with him, I got clean and off drugs."

Police say although the child's death was an accident, Lucente is still charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Three other children -- ages two, seven and 12 -- were home at the time, police told the news channel.

Police Chief Eugene St Clair said: "We believe he had rolled on top of the child.

"He had called 911."

Lucente is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in front of District Judge Douglas Loughner on May 30.
