A man is recovering after bloody encounter with a shark left him with a punctured artery.

Bryan Olivares, 33, also suffered a sliced tendon when he came into contact with the sea predator on Daytona Beach on Monday, July 25.

The beach-goer was jumping in the waves at the time and didn't notice anything was wrong until he felt the creature bump into him.

After feeling something that felt like a burning sensation and then a slice, he managed to make it back to shore before passing out and was taken to hospital.

Bryan had to have surgery to repair and reattach his butchered tendon, but was eventually released from hospital.

He told Fox35: "I felt a bump, something touched me. Not even a second later I felt the bite, or something that hurt."

"I tried to swim on my back and then I saw the blood. It was like a knife.

"That is the feeling and burning. I feel lucky and I’m glad I’m complete and that I’m not missing any limbs."

The incident was in Volusia County on the coast of Florida and was the sixth recorded bite this year.

Experts report there are usually 10 a year in this region with 25 in total and the worst months tend to be August and September.

Despite his nasty injury and urging anyone going to the beach to be near a lifeguard, Brian joked: "I was expecting to be in the top five."

When visiting shark bite hotspots, people are advised not to go the beach alone if they want to avoid being vulnerable to attack.

Director of the Florida Programme for Shakr Research, Gavin Naylor, said: "When you are in a group of people it is hard for a shark to pick on one individual and they get confused by lots of people moving.

"And also if there is more than one of you and somebody gets into trouble there is somebody there to help you."

Part of the Florida coastline has been branded the 'Shark Capital of the World' (FOX)

So far, there has been 28 shark attack bites in the US in 2022 with a total of 56 around the world.

A concerning 16 have been in Florida alone, though none of the six recorded deaths this year have been in the US.

Florida is home to New Smyrna Beach branded the "Shark Capital of the World" due to the number of attacks there in recent years.
