Man is charged after causing a disturbance which closed Ayr High Street to the public

A man has been charged after causing a disturbance that shut Ayr High Street.

The busy road was closed off to the pubic on Friday night following the incident.

At peak time for revellers pouring out of packed pubs the road was closed off between Nile Court and the Sandgate. Police also shut off Newmarket Street to pedestrians.

On Monday a 50-year-old man was charged at Ayr Sheriff Court after causing the disturbance.

At 11.40pm on Friday a Police Scotland statement said: “Officers in Ayr have been dealing with an incident in Ayr High Street.

“This involved the concern for the safety of a man. The man is now safely with officers. There is no ongoing risk to the public.

“Thank you for the cooperation from members of the public who were in the area. Ayr High Street remains closed to vehicles. Please avoid the area.

“The High Street between Nile Court and Sandgate, and Newmarket Street are also closed to pedestrians.”

They later added: “The earlier incident in Ayr High Street has been brought to a safe conclusion. No persons were injured and the male involved is being provided with appropriate support. Ayr High Street and Newmarket Street are open to pedestrians and vehicles.

Yesterday a police spokesperson said: “Police Scotland can confirm that a 50-year-old man has been charged after a disturbance in Ayr High Street on Friday. He appeared at Ayr Sheriff Court on Monday.”
