Man in court for cutting brake cable on ex-partner's car

A father-of-three looked on as his ex-partner drove off in a car without brakes.

Raymond Hislop sabotaged Victoria Tomlin's Peugeot and made a "late and ineffectual" attempt to stop her leaving, Bristol Crown Court heard today (September 5).

The 54-year-old, of Griffin Road in Clevedon, pleaded guilty to causing a danger to road users by interfering with a vehicle in August last year.

Judge Julian Lambert jailed him for two years.

He told Hislop: "What you did was premeditated and cynical."

He imposed a restraining order banning Hislop from contact with Miss Tomlin for three years.

Susan Cavender, prosecuting, said after a 12-year relationship the couple split and though Hislop was the subject of a restraining order he lived with her briefly.

On August , 2018, after an argument, Hislop suspected Miss Tomlin was off to see a new boyfriend, the court heard.

Ms Cavender said: "He was upset.

"She went out and the defendant was at home.

"He cut the brake cable to her Peugeot."

Later Miss Tomlin returned home, got ready to go out and went to her car.

Ms Cavender told the court: "She noticed the garage door was open.

"The defendant was in the garage, watching her.

"He looked flustered, sweaty and shifty.

"He said he was looking for a screwdriver."

When Miss Tomlin got in her car she reversed, Hislop went towards her, she tried to brake and nothing happened.

Miss Tomlin asked him if he had cut the brakes, he reached into the car but she drove off.

She managed to stop down the road and called police, who found wire cutters near to where the defendant had been standing and discovered a brake cable on the Peugeot had been cut.

James Tucker, defending, said: "There was a late and ineffectual attempt to stop her driving.

"She explained the relationship was over.

"He behaved in a way which was criminal, dangerous and utterly unacceptable."

Mr Tucker said Hislop had started a Building Better Relationships course.
