A man has appeared in court accused of travelling at speed through residential areas before driving at a police car.
Michael Bellerby was allegedly pulled over by officers in Walker, Newcastle, but panicked when he saw who they were.
Prosecutors claimed that the 36-year-old then got back into his Toyota Yaris and drove it "at speed" towards the police vehicle on two occasions before stopping at last minute.
Bellerby, of Church Walk House, in Walker, was in the dock at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, where he pleaded not guilty to one count each of taking a vehicle without the owner's consent, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.
His solicitor, Alanna Wesncraft, said he claimed no to be the driver.
Sue Baker, prosecuting, said the suspected offences happened at around 10.30am on April 14 this year when police were alerted to a car being "driven at speed" in the Byker area.
It's alleged that the officers saw the car and followed it into Walker.
Mrs Baker added: "The car is stopped by the officers, who the prosecution say was the defendant, he then got out and said "s**t" before getting back in and driving the vehicle at speed towards the police vehicle.
"Both police officers had to get back in the vehicle.
"The defendant then allegedly drove at them at speed again and stopped just before hitting the car."
The court heard that Bellerby was accused of then leaving the scene before finally abandoning the vehicle.
Ms Baker said the case was suitable to be tried at the magistrates' court as, if convicted, Bellerby could be committed for sentence to the crown court.
Bellerby was released on unconditional bail to next appear for trial at South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court on March 9 next year.
