Man impales face on metal gate spike in freak accident

A man was badly injured after he slipped and his face was impaled on a metal gate in a freak accident.

The victim stumbled close to the front door of a house in Church Road West in Walton at around 9pm on Tuesday evening.

He somehow managed to injure his face on one of the sharp spikes.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and firefighters spent time using a hydraulic pedal cutter to free him.

One appliance and the search and rescue vehicle attended the incident.

The man was sedated and was said to be breathing and conscious.

He was taken to Aintree Hospital by ambulance.

The extent of the injury is as yet unclear.

Video of the accident emerged and was passed to the ECHO which showed crowds of emergency workers gathered around the victim.

One eyewitness said: "It was shocking.

"From what we've heard, the man was coming out of a house when he slipped and fell onto the spike of the railings or the gate.

"He hurt his face quite badly.

"I hope he makes a recovery, it's an awful thing to happen."
