Man hit, killed by freight train in Geneva

A 24-year-old man was killed by a train July 5, 2019 in Geneva.

A Batavia man died Friday when he was hit by a freight train in west suburban Geneva.

About 3:50 p.m., the 24-year-old was on the Union Pacific railroad tracks west of the Randall Road Bridge when two trains approached from opposite directions, according to Geneva police.

The man, while walking on the westbound tracks, was watching an eastbound train approach and did not notice a train sounding its horn as it came up behind him, police said.

The westbound train applied its emergency brakes but still hit him, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police called it an accident. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday at the Kane County coroner’s office.
