Man held in lieu of $1.5M bail in 2014 fatal shooting

Sept. 30--A Chicago man was ordered held in lieu of $1.5 million bail after being charged with fatally shooting another man in 2014 after believing the victim had been telling people about the suspect's vehicle, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Kinton Jones, 22, is charged with first-degree murder in the Sept. 10, 2014, fatal shooting of Michael Wright, 21, of the 7300 block of South University Avenue.

In court, prosecutors said Jones, of the 2200 block of East 92nd Place, was on the 9300 block of South Greenwood Avenue when he stopped at 93rd Street and Greenwood Avenue.

Wright was in another vehicle when Jones drove up alongside him and confronted Wright. Prosecutors said Jones confronted Wright about him, "telling people what kind of car (Jones) drove."

After Wright denied "knowing anything about it," Jones allegedly pulled a gun from the center console of his car and shot at Wright. Wright then drove off and crashed his car about a block away, prosecutors said.

According to prosecutors, Wright suffered a gunshot wound to his chest and a wound to his back.

According to prosecutors, Jones was identified as the suspect and his car was captured by a speed camera in the area of the slaying before the shooting. Cellphone towers also placed Jones in the area of the shooting when it occurred, prosecutors said.

Jones has a pending unlawful use of a firearm by a felon charge, a conviction for residential burglary for which he was sentenced to five years in prison, an aggravated unlawful use of a weapon conviction for which he was sentenced to one year, and a conviction for possession of a stolen motor vehicle for which he received a three-year prison sentence.
