An 18-year-old man has been arrested at Manchester airport on suspicion of Syria-related terrorism offences, police said.
The arrest of the teenager, from Birmingham, is linked to the detention of a man and woman earlier this month at Gatwick airport and west London respectively, West Midlands police said.
It is not connected to the five arrests made this week that were associated with the attacks in Paris and Brussels. Searches are being carried out at two addresses in Birmingham.
“There was no risk to any passengers at Manchester airport or to the wider public in relation to these arrests,” a statement from West Midlands police said. “These arrests and this investigation is not connected to the terrorism arrests of five people from Birmingham in the last 48 hours.”
A man, 24, and a woman, 20, both from Birmingham, were arrested on suspicion of Syria-related terrorism offences 4 April and are currently on police bail.
There were 280 terrorism-related arrests in the year ending December 2015, according to official statistics. About 800 people from the UK have travelled to support or fight for jihadi groups such as Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, according to British authorities. About half are estimated to have since returned to the UK.
