Man gets 4 years for stealing from employer at Geneva law firm

A man was sentenced to four and a half years in prison June 20, 2019, for stealing more than $75,000 from his employer at a Geneva law firm.

A man has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for stealing more than $75,000 from a west suburban Geneva attorney.

Kane County Circuit Judge Clint Hull handed down the sentence June 20 to 39-year-old Franco Morrone, according to a statement from the Kane County state’s attorney’s office.

Morrone, who lives in Bartlett, pleaded guilty March 21 to one felony count each of theft and identity theft, prosecutors said.

“This crime illustrates Mr. Morrone’s greed,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said in a statement. “He was hired into a position of trust and was well paid, but immediately abused that trust for his own personal gain. It is important to hold people accountable for the damage that these thefts cause to people’s lives.”

Morrone worked for the Geneva law firm when he opened a credit card in his employer’s name between February 2016 and March 2017, according to prosecutors. He also took money from his employer’s bank account to pay the credit card balance.

In addition to the prison term, Hull ordered Morrone to pay $75,742.64 in restitution within five years of his release, the state’s attorney’s office said.

Morrone was transferred to the Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill on Tuesday, according to Illinois Department of Corrections records.
