Man found guilty of murder in east London knife attack

Raynolph Asante, 22, was found guilty of the murder of Jason Romeo, 20 - (The Metropolitan Police)

A man has been found guilty of the murder of a 20-year-old in Clapton in a knife attack.

Raynolph Asante, 22, was convicted of killing Jason Romeo at the Old Bailey on December 18.

Jason was stabbed to death in Clapton on February 18 after an altercation over a girl turned violent, the court heard.

Asante was arrested three days later following a Metropolitan Police investigation.

It came after officers identified him and launched an appeal to the public, which resulted in him handing himself in.

Four other men were charged with murder and found not guilty.

Following the sentencing, Jason’s family described the last ten months as “the most difficult of our lives” and expressed relief at justice being served for Jason.

They said: “Jason will always be remembered, forever missed and, as I used to tell him every day, always be loved.”

Detective Superintendent Kelly Allen, who led the investigation, described the killing as “a senseless act of violence that cost a young man his life.”

He went on: “Jason Romeo was just 20 years old, and his family and friends are now left to face the devastating impact of his loss.”

He detailed how, during the altercation, Asante chose to escalate by gathering others to confront Jason and ultimately stabbing him in the street.

“There is no justification for such brutality,” he emphasised.

DS Allen described how her team worked “tirelessly”, analysed CCTV footage, launched a media appeal, and ultimately identified the suspect.

She extended her condolences to Jason’s family after his sad death and added, “We hope today’s verdict brings them some measure of comfort.”
