Man found dead after firefighters called out to house blaze on New Year's Day

A man has been found dead after firefighters were called to a house fire on New Year's Day.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports of smoke from a property in Gillingham, Kent.

Two fire engines from Kent Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene yesterday.

Sadly a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation into the cause of the tragic fire, which was on the ground floor, is now underway.

A statement from the Fire Service said: "Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to Goodall Close in Gillingham to reports of a smoke logged property.

"Two fire engines attended and sadly a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Firefighters extinguished a fire on the ground floor using a hose reel jet.

"Kent Police and SECAmb paramedics also attended, and an investigation into the cause of the fire is underway."
