Man fired at police officers after they went to check he was OK

A man fired at unarmed police officers after they went to check on him.

Richard Lawrence Alan Barnard, 44, of Oswestry, has been sentenced to five years in prison after shooting at officers on January 21.

The incident in Llawddyn, Powys , saw Barnard shoot at unarmed officers who had attended to check on his wellbeing and at an overhead police helicopter.

Barnard was convicted on June 13 at Caernarfon Crown Court for possessing a sawn off shotgun with intent to cause fear of unlawful violence and acting in a manner likely to endanger aircraft by firing in the vicinity of an overhead police helicopter with a starting pistol.

Dyfed-Powys Police said no officers were injured in the incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Roberts said: "We welcome the sentencing that reflects the seriousness of the incident whereby our unarmed officers seeking to check Barnard’s welfare were shot at by a weapon that could only be assumed at the time to be lethal."

He added "The officers initially attending are to be commended for their bravery in co-ordinating a response whilst under significant stress."
