Man facing rape and murder charges to be brought to UK to face trial after 10-year battle

A man facing rape and murder charges will be brought back from India to face trial in Britain after a 10-year legal battle.

Aman Vyas, 34, is believed to be in custody after the Sunday Mirror told how families here are desperate for answers.

He is wanted for questioning over the murder of Michelle Samaraweera, 35, found dead in a children’s playground in Walthamstow, East London, in 2009.

She was raped and strangled. Vyas is also wanted over three alleged rapes before Michelle’s murder.

The son of a wealthy businessman, he had been living in the UK on a student visa.

He went to live with relatives in India after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Vyas was held at New Delhi airport in 2011 while trying to board a flight to Thailand and was released on bail. He has appeared in court at least 50 times.

In 2016, then-PM David Cameron ordered ministers to contact their Indian counterparts to try to speed up Vyas’s extradition.

And last year Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy asked Theresa May to raise the case with her Indian conterpart during his visit to the UK.

Michelle’s sister Ann Chandradasa, 47, said: “I’m delighted my sister will finally get a trial after all these years.”
