A 72-year-old man has been extradited from Queensland to NSW, accused of sexually abusing a young girl in the state's north more than five years ago.

Detectives attached to the Coffs-Clarence Child Abuse Unit obtained an arrest warrant for the man and Queensland detectives arrested him at a Surfers Paradise unit on Tuesday.

He appeared at Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday, where detectives were granted his extradition to NSW.

He was escorted to Tweed Heads Police Station and charged with inciting a victim under 10 to commit an indecent act, indecently assaulting a person under 16 and sexual intercourse with child under 10.

Police will allege in court the man sexually abused a young girl who was known to him - then aged between seven and eight - in Coffs Harbour between 2014 and 2017.

He was refused bail and will appear at Lismore Local Court on Thursday.
