A 26-year-old California man drowned in the Colorado River Monday morning after jumping into the water to recover a hat, according to local authorities.
Kristopher Nathaniel Logan, a resident of San Marcos, was traveling on a pontoon boat near Davis Camp when the incident occurred.
According to a statement from the Bullhead City Police Department, Logan went into the river after a hat blew off the boat. He did not resurface.
The Bullhead City Fire Department dive team later recovered Logan’s body from the water. Logan was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The drowning took place just north of the bridge connecting Laughlin, Nevada, and Bullhead City, Arizona.
“The drowning appears to be accidental and not suspicious or criminal in nature,” police said in a statement posted to Facebook. “We offer our sincere condolences to the family.”
Local residents and frequent visitors to the area noted that the river’s low temperatures can cause sudden physical distress, regardless of a person’s swimming ability.
“The cramping you can get from the cold is wild,” one person commented on the police department’s social media post. “Sometimes it has nothing to do with being able to swim or how strong the current is. It’s not easy to roll over and go with the current when your calves are both cramping.”
