Man dies in Perth hospital after alleged assault

Mr McCarthy died after several days in Royal Perth Hospital.

A Perth father of two who was allegedly attacked in East Fremantle last week has died in hospital.

Police say Charles John McCarthy, 32, was walking with another man and a woman on Riverside Road early on Saturday, December 23, when their group encountered a pair of fisherman.

An altercation occurred and Mr McCarthy was allegedly struck on the head with an object by 34-year-old Joondanna man Andrew Doan.

Mr McCarthy was taken to Royal Perth Hospital where he remained in a critical condition, but he died overnight.

Mr Doan is facing a charge of causing grievous bodily harm, but this may be upgraded at a later date.

He faced court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on January 3.

Mr McCarthy is understood to have emigrated from Ireland in 2000, and lived in the Perth suburb of Atwell with his wife and children.

Members of his family had flown from Ireland over Christmas to be by his side in hospital.

Friends and family have also posted tributes to Mr McCarthy on social media.
