Man dies in hospital after falling from Redheugh Bridge and being rescued from River Tyne

A man who was recovered from the River Tyne after falling from the Redheugh Bridge has died.

Police officers were called out to the bridge near to the Gateshead side at around 2.45pm on Wednesday after reports of concern for a man.

During a search of the River Tyne by the emergency services, a man was found in the water.

The man was pulled from the river and taken to the Newcastle Quayside where police and paramedics were waiting near to the Tyne Bridge.

He was then taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle by ambulance but died as a result of his injuries.

Officers are now working to identify him and inform his family.

A police spokesperson said: "At 2.44pm today, police received a report of a concern for a man on the Redheugh Bridge, Gateshead.

"Emergency services attended after it was reported that a man had gone into the River Tyne. The man was pulled from the river and taken to hospital where he sadly died from his injuries.

"Inquiries are ongoing to identify the man and inform his next of kin.

"There is not believed to be any third party involvement and a report is being prepared for the coroner."

A fire engine , an ambulance and a Hazardous Area Response Team vehicle remained at the scene on the Quayside for around an hour after the man was recovered.

An air ambulance also landed on the Quayside beyond the Millennium Bridge.

Emergency services were also sent to the Staithes on the Gateshead side of the river as part of the same response.

The road on the Newcastle Quayside remained open throughout the emergency operation.
