One man has died and two people have been hospitalised following a crash in Cervantes, about 200 kilometres north of Perth.

The crash occurred just before 4:00pm on Saturday afternoon, when a utility travelling north on Indian Ocean Drive collided with an SUV travelling east on Cervantes Road.

The male driver, 41, of the SUV died at the scene.

Two passengers in the utility — a 37-year-old man and 38-year-old woman — were airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the utility was uninjured.

Spate of fatal crashes prompts multi-million dollar upgrade

Indian Ocean Drive has undergone a series of multi-million dollar upgrades, following 50 serious crashes in an 18-month period to June 2017.

A safety review the same year led to the speed limit on Indian Ocean Drive being lowered from 110 kilometres per hour to 100kph.

However, there have been several fatal crashes since then, including in September 2019, when two women died in a crash between a car and a bus near the turn-off to the Pinnacles rock formation, south of the Cervantes Road intersection.

The state government spent more than $15 million upgrading the road between 2018 and 2019.

Further works to widen some sections and improve intersections were due to be completed in 2020.

Anyone with information or vision of Saturday's crash is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
