Man dies after punches thrown in Gold Coast fight over stolen food

A man has died in hospital 10 days after he was involved in a brawl outside a Surfers Paradise nightclub over stolen food.

Police said at 1:00am on October 1, a group of friends sitting on a bench on Orchid Avenue were approached by two men who stole some food.

A 29-year-old man became involved in the fight that ensued.

He was allegedly punched and lost consciousness, falling and hitting his head on the ground.

The 29-year-old, who sustained serious head injuries and was placed in an induced coma, died in hospital on Friday afternoon.

A 27-year-old man who fled the scene was arrested nearby and was charged with one count of grievous bodily harm.

Speaking to media on the day of the assault, Detective Acting Inspector Greg Aubort said there was no evidence of provocation.

"It's amazing how quickly these things escalate out of control," he said.

"Often with these offences it starts with the most innocuous event, whether it's pinching a bit of food or throwaway comment."
