Man dies after falling ill after Gardai respond to disturbance in Offaly

A man has died after Gardai were called to the scene of a disturbance in Co. Offaly on Monday.

Officers were called to the scene of a premises at around 4pm after a disturbance was reported on Patrick Street in Tullamore.

Gardai say during the course of dealing with the incident the man aged in his 40s fell ill and as a result officers requested urgent medical assistance.

The man was treated at the scene and taken to Tullamore hospital where he later was pronounced dead.

GSOC has confirmed an investigation into the incident has been launched

A spokesperson told the Irish Mirror: "Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) received a referral under s.102 of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005 from the Garda Síochána following the interaction between a male and Garda members in Tullamore.

"The referral was made under the section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005 which provides for independent investigation of any matter that appears to indicate that the conduct of a member of the Garda Síochána may have resulted in the death of, or serious harm to, a person.

"GSOC deployed a team of investigators to the scene and an examination of the incident continues.

"GSOC will make no further comment at this time."

Gardai said in a statement: "On Monday 3rd May 2021 shortly after 4pm, Gardaí from Tullamore were called to the scene of a disturbance a premises on Patrick Street, Tullamore.

"In the course of dealing with the incident urgent medical assistance was requested by Gardaí for a man aged in his late 40s. The man was treated at the scene and removed by Ambulance to Tullamore Hospital where he has since been pronounced dead.

"The local Coroner has been notified and the outcome of a post-mortem examination will determine the course of further enquires in the case."
