Man dies after air ambulance called to Sunderland street

A man has died after an air ambulance was called to a street in Sunderland.

Emergency services were called to "medical episode" outside Frank’s The Flooring Store on Roker Avenue, Sunderland at around 11.40am on Thursday (March 11).

Northumbria Police, the North East Ambulance Service and the Great North Air Ambulance Service all attended the scene with witnesses seeing the helicopter land on a nearby field.

Despite best efforts, the man was confirmed as dead by emergency workers and police not treating the death as suspicious.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At 11.50am yesterday (Thursday) we were alerted by the ambulance service to a man who was suffering a medical episode outside Frank’s The Flooring Store on Roker Avenue, Sunderland.

"Emergency services attended the scene but sadly the man was confirmed as deceased.

"Officers are not treating the death as suspicious and a report will be made for the coroner."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service confirmed: "We were called to a medical incident on Roker Avenue at 11.40am.

"We dispatched two double crewed ambulances and requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance."
