Man dials 999 after Primark refuse to let him in to buy grey sweatpants

A "selfish" shopper who called 999 to complain Primark had refused to him entry to buy sweatpants has been berated for wasting police time.

The man went to the clothing store in Leeds to purchase some "grey joggers", but security staff wouldn't let him into the building.

West Yorkshire Police, who took the call from the distraught shopper, shared their response to him in a tweet under the hashtag "not999".

They wrote: "If you are not allowed in @Primark because their security staff won't let you in, then ringing the police on 999 is not going to gain you entry either. Even if you only 'wanted grey joggers' #Not999."

Twitter users branded the man "selfish" and called for him to be "fined" for wasting police time.

One wag quipped: "Hope you told him to jog on."

Another joker wrote: "Grey jogging bottoms are a crime against fashion! Maybe he was trying to report himself?"

Another user tweeted: "There are some very weird selfish people in this world.

"Maybe if they charged hoax callers a £50 fine they may consider people who really need our emergency services.

"Police Fire and Ambulances are already under great stress."

Another added: "Being snubbed by Primark must be a record low for anyone."

It comes as another emergency service declared a "critical incident" over the sheer number of calls they are receiving.

On Saturday evening South Central Ambulance Service declared it was struggling to cope with the amount of 999 calls it was receiving.

People in Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Hampshire, were urged to use the emergency number "wisely".

A spokeswoman said: "South Central Ambulance Service has declared a Critical Incident due to extreme pressures across our services.

"Our staff and volunteers are working extremely hard to respond to calls but the volume is overwhelming.

"Please, please, support us by using our services wisely, we’re here for life threatening illnesses and injuries.

"Thank you so much".

But the past week hasn't been all annoyances for police, as one force were surprised with a sweet note from a grateful resident.

The officers were patrolling on Mischief Night, the evening before Halloween known for pranks and vandalism, and wanted to make sure people felt safe.

The night looked set to take a turn for the worse when they returned to their car and they found a note had been stuck to the side window, the Liverpool Echo reports.

But they soon realised it was a letter of thanks, as one resident had penned the sweet note - saying they felt safer knowing the police were around.

The message was written on a piece of paper and said: "I live at number (removed) and I can't tell you how grateful I am for your presence."

Posting a picture of the note to Facebook, officers also outlined what they had been doing through the night,

A spokesperson said: "A couple of our special constabulary colleagues saying hello to our mounted officers and a lovely note of thanks from one of our residents.

"Thankfully the majority of people are enjoying the Halloween weekend responsibly."
