Man creates fake website for Taj Mahal tickets, dupes many

NEW DELHI: A software engineer has been arrested for duping hundreds of people by creating a fake website to facilitate online booking of tickets for historical monuments, police said on Friday.

The accused, Sandeep Chand, lost his job during the Covid-19 pandemic and resorted to the fake website for easy money, they said.

According to police, a complaint was received from Director General, Archaeological Survey of India, Ministry of Culture about people being cheated while booking tickets for historical monuments online.

In one of the incidents, a ticket to visit Taj Mahal was booked through website www.agramonuments.in. The victim made the booking, but the ticket could not be generated and its fee was deducted from their bank account, police said. A case was registered in this regard and investigation taken up.

“During the course of investigation, technical details of the registrant and user of the alleged website i.e. www.agramonumnts.in were collected, based on which technical surveillance was mounted on the alleged. The accused frequently changed his location. However on perseverance, Sandeep Chand was apprehended from Champawat, Uttrakhand,” Special CP, Crime, Devesh Chandra Srivastava, said in a statement.

“He studied the basics of the website of ASI before creating the fake website.”
