A man has been confirmed dead after a shooting in Co Louth.

The victim, aged in his 30s, had been in a critical condition after the

The attack took place at a caravan park in the seaside village of Clogherhead, north of Drogheda.

Witnesses said a number of shots were fired from a car towards a mobile home beside a newly-renovated Mace supermarket at 2.45pm.

A stray bullet is also thought to have a struck the car of an innocent woman.

A witness said: "People were running out of the shop to see what had happened.

"No-one in or around the shop was injured."

A garda spokesman said: "Gardaí are currently at the scene of a fatal shooting incident that occurred at approximately 2.50pm today Tuesday 27th August 2019 at a caravan park on the Clogherhead to Termonfeckin road at Clogherhead, County Louth.

"A male in his early 30s was pronounced dead at the scene. The scene is currently preserved for technical examination.

"An incident room has been established at Drogheda Garda Station. Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information to come forward, particularly anyone who may have noticed anything suspicious in the Clogherhead area earlier today.

"Anyone with information can contact Drogheda Garda Station on 041 987 4200 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.   No further information is available at this time."

Drogheda-based Labour Senator Gerald Nash said: "This is a very serious development in Clogherhead, it is too early to say whether this shooting is connected to an ongoing feud, but people are shocked by it.

"This is normally a very quiet and peaceful village."

Speaking about the shocking shooting, Sinn Féin Louth TD Gerry Adams said:

“This was a despicable act, carried out in the middle of the day in a quiet, seaside village.

“There are reports that one man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“This attack took place outside a busy supermarket.

“Families in this area, like many others, are busy getting ready for school and going about their daily lives.

“This terrible incident could have had even more devastating effects. I urge anyone with information to bring it to An Garda Síochána.”

A violent dispute has been raging for over a year between a criminal and Traveller gang in Drogheda, which has included shootings, petrol bomb attacks and abductions.

Earlier this year, 25 new Garda recruits were sent to the town to free up more senior officers to contain the feud.
