Man City transfer round-up: Julian Alvarez 'last details' as Harry Kane talks future

For long spells of the January transfer window, it has looked unlikely that Manchester City would sign any players.

But that might be about the change in the coming days.

Pep Guardiola's side had their first slip in weeks on Saturday in the Premier League, potentially giving their rivals a glimmer of hope in the title race. The 1-1 draw with Southampton may have also provided some extra urgency to strengthen the squad too, with a gruelling calendar coming up.

Mirror Sport has all of your latest City transfer headlines, with fresh updates on a couple of potential targets.

City close in on Alvarez

According to La Nacion (h/t Sport Witness), Manchester City are close to finalising a deal for River Plate's Julian Alvarez.

Various reports have surfaced in recent days noting City's interest and the aforementioned story says only the "last details" need to be ironed out before the transfer can go ahead.

City are said to have made an offer totalling €24.4 million (£20.4 million) for Alvarez. It's reported that offer has been "already accepted" by River.

In the piece, it's suggested Alvarez would remain at River until the end of the season on loan before moving to City in the summer. The 21-year-old netted 18 goals and six assists from 21 appearances in Liga Profesional.

Kane talks future

Manchester City target Harry Kane has said he still holds ambitions to play at the highest level.

Kane was the subject of a failed transfer pursuit from City in the summer, as Tottenham Hotspur resisted approaches from the Premier League champions for the England skipper.

The striker has been a long way short of his best in recent months, but has shown some signs of rediscovering his goalscoring touch as of late.

Kane spoke about his hopes for the future in an interview with Sky Sports (h/t the Manchester Evening News).

"I just want to be playing at the highest level possible," he said. 2My focus is fully on this season and trying to get as high up the league as possible.

"We are still in the FA Cup and are trying to win a trophy as it is every year. I am not going to go into loads of detail about anything else going on. It is just about working hard for the team and trying to improve as I know I can and score more goals than I have this season."

Rice told to join City

Former England winger Joe Cole has advised Declan Rice against joining Manchester United and has encouraged him to move to Manchester City if the opportunity arises.

Rice has been linked with a big-money move away from West Ham in recent months, as he's developed into one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

United and Chelsea have both been mentioned as possible suitors, but Cole thinks City would be the ideal landing spot for the 22-year-old.

"I wouldn’t go if I was Declan Rice, no," said Cole of the United interest. "I think you run the risk of going there and still not winning trophies.

"I think if Man City were on the table, you’d go there because in recent years it guarantees you trophies and I think Declan would want that.

"But for me there’s no reason for him to not stay at West Ham if the progress is still going in that [upward] pattern, but that’s for him and the owners. He needs better players around him at West Ham to go to that next level."
