Man City told they could regret signing Jack Grealish instead of Harry Kane last summer

Chris Sutton believes Manchester City could regret signing Jack Grealish rather than Harry Kane last summer by the end of the season.

Kane came back to haunt City on Saturday as he produced an outstanding display for Tottenham at the Etihad, scoring twice to help his side to a dramatic 3-2 win.

The result came as another big twist in the title race, with Liverpool now sitting just six points behind the Blues at the top of the table, with a game in hand — and a trip to the Etihad still to come in April.

Kane’s performance came as a timely reminder as speculation continues over his future in north London, having been the subject of a failed attempt from City to sign him last summer.

Despite the Blues’ best attempts and Kane favouring a move, Spurs held firm and the England captain stayed at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

City though did manage to make one big-money signing during the window as they signed Jack Grealish for £100million, although the former Aston Villa man has struggled to make a major impact thus far.

And former Blackburn and Celtic striker Sutton believes City could end up regretting their transfer activity should Liverpool beat them to the title.

“If City come up short, then the fact they were in for Harry Kane last season and they didn’t get it over the line — if they couldn’t get it over the line, then that’s an issue — but that could be the difference,” Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“They signed Jack Grealish for £100million who hasn’t set the world alight, and maybe had they signed Harry Kane, they’d be further clear, who knows?

“He’s England’s best centre-forward, he’s a brilliant goalscorer, he hasn’t had his best season but we can judge it at the end of the season and have an argument between us and then you can all say I was right!”
