Man City star Rodri explains his 'partially surprised' verdict on Liverpool's poor start

Manchester City star Rodri says he is only 'partially surprised' by Liverpool's poor start to the 2022/23 season.

The Reds sit eighth in the Premier League table with nine points out of a possible 18. They suffered defeat against Manchester United and only managed a draw against Fulham, Crystal Palace and Everton. In the Champions League, Liverpool clinched a 2-1 victory over Ajax last week, but were beaten 4-1 by Napoli in their opening group stage match earlier this month.

City, on the other hand, sit second in the table level on points with Tottenham. Pep Guardiola's side are yet to lose in the league so far but picked up two draws against Newcastle United and Aston Villa.

Many are somewhat surprised by Liverpool's form of late, given they've shown a level of consistency over the last few years similar to that of City. However, Rodri has warned the English league 'doesn't allow you to relax' without dropping points.

“Only partially," he told Gazzetta dello Sport (via SportWitness ), when asked if he was surprised by their start. "The Premier League level is so high that as soon as you slow down, you lose points. Liverpool are not in crisis, they are just less effective, and the Premier League does not allow you to relax.”

Liverpool return to action on October 1 with a home clash against Brighton, who recently lost manager Graham Potter to Chelsea. The Reds have seen their last two domestic matches postponed following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, so have a game in hand over their rivals.

City saw just one game against Tottenham postponed, but managed a 3-0 victory over Wolves when football resumed last weekend. They'll now prepare to face Manchester United at the Etihad on October 2 following the conclusion of the international break.
