Man charged with spying for Iran, Met Police say

  • A Liverpool man, Vahid Aberi, 39, has been charged with assisting a foreign intelligence service following an investigation by counter-terror police .
  • Aberi was arrested on Wednesday in the Birmingham area, with the investigation specifically relating to Iran.
  • He faces charges under section 3(1) and (9) of the National Security Act 2023.
  • Counter Terrorism Policing London confirmed that searches were conducted at addresses in Birmingham and Liverpool.
  • Aberi has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday, with police stating no direct threat to the public has been identified.
