A man who was arrested by Northern Territory Police following the death of a 42-year-old in the northern suburbs of Darwin has been charged with murder.

Officers were called to a home in Malak just before 6pm on Tuesday following reports there had been an argument between two men from the Tiwi Islands.

Detective Senior Sergeant Jak Evans said a man was found with critical injuries at the home.

"They [police] commenced CPR until St John Ambulance arrived, unfortunately on arrival St John Ambulance deemed him to be deceased," he said.

A 28-year-old man believed to have been involved in the argument was not at the scene, but was found and arrested nearby a short time later.

Police said the two men had travelled to Darwin for the funeral of an extended family member.

He said alcohol was believed to have been involved, and weapons were seized.

"His injuries included a number of blunt force injuries, he'd been hit with an object, he'd also been stabbed once in the abdomen," he said.

Malak resident Alysha Milner was cooking in her kitchen just a couple of doors down from where the incident happened.

"I heard a really loud shriek from one of them, some screaming followed by a lady that sounded quite distraught and then there was quite a bit of silence," she said.

"It was quite a chilling scream."

The man appeared before a judge in the Darwin Local Court on Thursday.

He has been remanded in custody until February next year.
