Shaun Sanderson faces court over alleged murder, attempted murder in Melbourne's north

Police made the arrest on a busy Preston road on Wednesday afternoon. (ABC News)

A man charged over an alleged fatal stabbing attack in Melbourne's north has been remanded in custody after facing court.

Shaun Sanderson was arrested following an incident in Reservoir on Wednesday morning that left a man, 29, dead at the scene and a woman, 65, in hospital.

The 32-year-old was charged with murder and attempted murder overnight and faced Melbourne Magistrates' Court this morning.

The court heard Mr Sanderson appeared to have a history of psychosis and a potential diagnosis of schizophrenia.

His lawyer also said the 32-year-old initially refused to appear in court because he was concerned about the attention the matter had already garnered.

"He needs to come up," Magistrate Olivia Trumble replied.

"Him coming into the court is not going to focus anyone else's attention on it any more than it already may well be."

The 32-year-old did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody after a court appearance that lasted just minutes.

He will return to court for a committal hearing in July.

Victoria Police yesterday said emergency services were called to the Willoughby Street property in Reservoir around 8:20am after receiving reports of an "assault with an edged weapon".

The incident sparked a large-scale search operation before Mr Sanderson was arrested on a street in Preston several hours later.

Police believe the three people were known to each other.
