Man charged over Bellbird Hotel standoff

A man has been charged over a standoff with police at the Bellbird Hotel between Orbost and Cann River, in Victoria's east.

A Melbourne man has been charged over a 10-hour standoff with police at a hotel in East Gippsland.

Police allege the 42-year-old from Hampton Park took a shotgun into the Bellbird Hotel, between Orbost and Cann River in Victoria's east, on Monday morning.

Police were forced to block the Princes Highway in both directions, while they tried to resolve the siege, causing significant delays for hundreds of motorists.

The man will face court in September, charged with criminal damage, being unlawfully on a premises, failing to stop, and firearms offences.
