Man charged after incident at Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall

A man has been charged after an “incident” at Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall which saw the busy street closed between Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square on Easter Monday morning.

Prashanth Kandaiah, 29, was charged on Tuesday with attempted grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article. He was due to appear in custody at Westminster Magistrates’ Court later on Tuesday.

Police said on Monday that a man was arrested after being confronted by two Ministry of Defence Police officers around 8.50am.

A taser was deployed and the man was restrained by officers.

There were no reports of any injuries, officers said.

A brief CCTV video clip of the aftermath of the incident, via Transport for London, showed police vans blocking off the street.

Horse Guards Parade is the ceremonial parade ground in St James’s Park.

It is the scene of the Trooping the Colour parade on the Queen’s official birthday in June.
