Man breaks down in tears as couple explains they can't even afford food this Christmas

A man has broken down in tears as he and his wife explain they haven't put Christmas decorations up this year as they can't even afford food this winter.

Roy Herring and his wife Joan are struggling to live on just £228 a week, before asking a reporter if they could make do with so little.

The couple appeared on BBC Breakfast and revealed they are not celebrating Christmas this year due to the cost of living crisis.

Joan said that she used to enjoy putting lights up Christmas lights in her window and outside their home.

However they won't be able to afford the extra electric use this winter as bills have surged, Lancs Live reports.

When asked what the couple were giving up this Christmas, speaking honestly Roy said: "Everything. Food. Clothing.

"Cost of living - can't afford it."

Roy emotionally added: "I cannot live no more, do you understand me.

"It's upsetting and sometimes I sit down here when I'm on my own, and Joan's in bed, and I will just sit there and cry and think 'is it worth it?'"

He went on to say how important it has been to have neighbours helping him out "in more ways that one", before becoming overcome with emotion.

She said: "Just trying to dial back on everything really, just to make sure we stay afloat."
