Police find man 'safe and well' after fears he was savagely beaten and abducted in Scots town

Police have traced a man who they believed may have been a victim of a brutal assault and potential abduction in Greenock.

Officers launched an appeal to identify the man after receiving reports that he had suffered “repeated blows” to the head and body at around 3.50am on Thursday.

The alleged attacker was thought to have been in the company of another man and a woman who were seen on Brachelston Street in the town.

A mysterious white Ford Transit van was also spotted near the scene and was last seen being driven to Wellington Street after the apparent attack.

Uniformed officers carried out door to door enquiries throughout the day to try and identify who the victim may be and the extent of his injuries.

CCTV footage was also examined.

But Police Scotland have now confirmed that the man has been found safe and well.

A spokesperson said: “Following our appeal relating to concerns for a man’s welfare after reports he was assaulted and potentially abducted, he has been traced safe and well.

“The incident happened on Brachelston Street at around 4am this morning (Thursday 28 May).

“Officers are satisfied with the circumstances which have been established as a minor disturbance.”
