Man charged with murder in NSW Hunter region

A man has been charged with murder over the death of 54-year-old Graham Cameron in Newcastle in the NSW Hunter region last year.

Emergency services were called to a unit fire on Fullerton Street in Stockton in the early hours of July 26, 2021.

The body of the home's sole occupant, Graham Cameron, was found inside.

Police searched a home on Pitt Street Wednesday morning and arrested 22-year-old, Dalton Trent Oliver.

He was taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station and charged with murder.

Mr Oliver appeared in court on Wednesday afternoon, where bail was not applied for.

Magistrate Ian Cheetham requested a mental health assessment be undertaken and the matter will return to court in November.

Other people involved

NSW Police Homicide Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty, said police believed the two men were "very casual acquaintances".

While describing today as "a significant breakthrough," detectives expect more arrests will be made.

"Police believe that, and will allege in court, that there’s other people who are involved in this murder," Detective Superintendent Doherty said.

"The investigators have shown tenacity and determination to gain a lot of direct evidence from witnesses.

"We won’t rest until other people that are involved in this incident [are] identified and put before the courts."
