Man arrested on suspicion of drug driving after motorway link road closed for hours after lorry overturns

This was the wreckage left behind after a lorry overturned on a busy motorway link road near Wigan. Police rushed out to the Orrell Interchange, which links the M6 and M58 motorways, in the early hours of this morning (November 26).

The lorry smashed into a bridge and overturned on the westbound carriageway before 4.45am. North West Motorway Police says the driver, who was not injured in the crash, has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving.

The driver remains in police custody this evening. Drivers have been unable to use the Orrell Interchange heading from the M6 southbound to the M58 westbound since the collision.

Emergency resurfacing work has been taking place this evening, since the lorry was recovered. It is understood that resurfacing work will continue on the road throughout the night.

A spokesperson for North West Motorway Police wrote on Twitter: "Due to an RTC there is currently no route from the east side of Orrell Interchange to the west (M6sb/A577 to the M58). This likely to be the case for most of the morning to allow recovery & repairs to be carried out.

"The driver was uninjured but was arrested for drug driving." In an update issued on Twitter this evening, a spokesperson for National Highways North West said: "The recovery of the lorry is complete on the M6 J26 roundabout however emergency resurfacing will now take place.

"There remains no access from the M6 south onto the M58 west. If your heading to Liverpool continue to J23 and use the A580 west or to J21A and use the M62 west."
