Man arrested on suspicion of arson after phone mast set on fire in Gateshead

A man has been arrested after a phone mast was set on fire in Gateshead.

Northumbria Police were alerted to the blaze in Wardley at around 4.20am on Monday.

The fire was subsequently extinguished and no-one was injured.

Police said an investigation has been launched and officers have arrested a 39-year-old man on suspicion of arson.

The mast provided phone signal (PA)

A spokesman added: “He remains in police custody and is assisting officers with their enquiries.”
