Man arrested in Westmeath for fraudulently claiming coronavirus unemployment payments

A teenager has been arrested for fraudulently claiming coronavirus unemployment benefits.

Gardai from the National Economic Crime Bureau arrested the man aged in his late teens after a search was carried out at a house in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath on Thursday.

The teen is suspected of receiving six separate Covid-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payments into a bank account, in what are believed to be bogus names.

Gardai carried out the search and arrested the alleged fraudster on foot of intelligence received from Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection about the fraud payments.

During the search gardai seized a sum of cash along as well as some counterfeit cash.

The man was arrested at the scene and taken to Mullingar Garda Station where he is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Gardai say investigations are continuing.
