A crime scene remained in place for several hours on Saturday afternoon and evening, as detectives and forensic investigators carried out enquiries. A number of shops were taped off as police appeared to be focusing on a property above one of the businesses.

Staff at a takeaway on Union Street told the Manchester Evening News of their shock. They said: "It’s a really safe place around here. Nothing like this ever happens.

"Every face you see you probably know. It's the kind of thing that makes you feel like you can let your kids walk around without parents and run freely."

A mum standing at the police cordon said: "It doesn’t bear thinking about, you just dread hearing anything like that involving a child."

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "We were called shortly after 3.15pm on Saturday, May 28 to a report of a child falling from a window of a flat on Station Road, Urmston. The child – a four-year-old boy – was taken to hospital with injuries that are thankfully now not deemed to be serious.

"It’s believed the child fell from the second-storey of the flat and enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances. A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect and he remains in custody for questioning."
