A man has been arrested after a Mercedes allegedly struck a police car and narrowly missed officers in inner Melbourne.

The crash happened on Thursday when the officers were investigating an earlier crash on the Eastern Freeway at Clifton Hill.

As police were setting up barricades, a Mercedes allegedly ploughed through the scene, hit the car and kept driving along the freeway.

The eight officers involved were not physically hurt but were said to have been shaken by the incident.

A 37-year-old Coburg man was arrested on Friday morning at a hotel in Kew.

A Mercedes was found at the same address.

A 31-year-old Airport West woman was also arrested over unrelated matters.

Both are assisting police.

A driver wanted over the first crash on Thursday remains on the run.

Police say a suspected stolen Holden crashed into barriers on the off-ramp from the freeway before the male motorist fled the scene on foot.
